10 Serious Signs in Dogs You Should Never Ignore

When to Call the Vet Immediately

By Dr. Sunil S Rana,

As a loving pet parent, it’s natural to feel anxious when your dog doesn’t seem quite right. Whether they’re vomiting, unusually tired, or refusing food, recognizing the critical warning signs can be the difference between a quick recovery and a life-threatening emergency.

This guide highlights 10 serious symptoms that should prompt you to contact your vet immediately, especially when they appear suddenly or are persistent. Prompt veterinary care can save your dog’s life.

🚨

Emergency Dog Symptoms Every Pet Owner Should Know

1.

Vomiting or Nausea

Occasional vomiting can be harmless. But repeated vomiting, dry heaving, or vomiting blood is a red flag. If your dog is drooling excessively, pacing, or has a bloated belly, it could indicate gastric torsion (bloat) -  a true emergency. Seek immediate help.

2.

Difficulty Breathing

Laboured or noisy breathing, wheezing, or open-mouth breathing (other than regular panting) is always serious. If your dog has blue or pale gums or is using both chest and belly to breathe, rush them to a vet.

3.

Bleeding or Blood in Vomit, Urine, or Stool

Small cuts may not require urgent care, but heavy bleeding, deep wounds, or signs of internal bleeding (like blood in vomit or stools) require swift veterinary intervention.

4.

Eye Problems or Sudden Eye Changes

Eye issues escalate quickly. Symptoms like redness, bulging, cloudiness, squinting, or discharge can indicate glaucoma, trauma, or infection. Dogs that paw at their face or keep eyes shut are in pain - get them checked immediately.

5.

Lethargy or Sudden Weakness

If your usually active dog is suddenly lethargic, limp, or disinterested in food and play, it may signal infection, organ failure, poisoning, or internal pain. Time is crucial - visit your vet.

6.

Loss of Appetite or Unexplained Weight Loss

Dogs may skip meals occasionally, but a persistent loss of appetite or weight loss could point to dental disease, diabetes, liver trouble, or cancer. Don’t wait for it to worsen.

7.

Difficulty Walking or Sudden Paralysis

If your dog suddenly limps, drags legs, or can’t walk - especially the hind legs - get immediate help. Breeds like Dachshunds and Corgis are prone to spinal issues requiring urgent care.

8.

Excessive Thirst or Dehydration

Drinking more water than usual or symptoms like dry gums, sunken eyes, or dark urine may signal kidney disease, diabetes, or hormonal imbalances. Monitor water intake and consult a vet.

9.

Trouble Urinating or Defecating

Straining without producing urine or feces is a medical emergency, especially in male dogs. Urinary blockages can lead to bladder rupture, while constipation beyond 48 hours also needs attention.

10.

Collapse or Loss of Consciousness

If your dog faints, collapses, or has a seizure, stay calm and get help immediately. Causes range from trauma to heart issues or neurological problems. Transport them gently to the vet.

📌

What Else Can You Do in an Emergency?

  • Stay calm. Your dog senses your anxiety.
  • Keep your vet’s contact info easily accessible.
  • Use a muzzle if your dog is in pain - even the gentlest pets may bite when scared or hurt.
  • Carry a pet first-aid kit with antiseptic, bandages, and saline for eye flushing.
  • Don’t delay. When in doubt, it’s always better to be safe.

Adopt Love Unflinching...

Before You Bring Home a Puppy – Know This First! By Dr Sunil S Rana  DPH's Max-Pet-Vet Hospital & Online Veterinary Consultation Services.  Adopting a puppy is one of the most beautiful decisions a family can make. But like every great decision, it comes with responsibility, awareness, and mutual consent from every family member. A puppy is not a toy; it’s a living soul full of emotion, energy, and unconditional love. Before you welcome this bundle of joy into your home, here are some essential things to keep in mind. 1. It’s a Life, Not a Plaything The first and foremost thing to understand is that a pup is a living being. Once you decide to adopt, you're committing to a journey that spans 10 to 15 years, sometimes more. That journey will demand time, patience, money, and above all; love. Make sure everyone in the household is ready to take up this commitment. 2. Health is Wealth: Vaccination is Vital Just like your child needs timely vaccinations, your pup requires...
